I disagreed then and I disagree still today. When you are not getting enough sleep, it is so hard to function. Everything is hard work and even the most basic task feels difficult. I think with a good night’s sleep, you can tackle almost anything. Sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle for all age groups.
For children, it is essential for their health, growth and development. Sleep promotes alertness, memory and performance. Children who get enough sleep, are more likely to function better and are less likely to have behavioural problems and mood swings.
For adults, sleep is also essential for general well being. A good nights sleep benefits your heart, helps maintain body weight and improves concentration, memory and decision making.
Sleep problems in infancy may persist into school aged kids and onto adulthood. It is therefore important for parents to start early and help their children develop good sleep habits.
Each child is different and has different sleep needs. The chart below shows the recommended hours of sleep, (including naps for children up to five years) for infants, children and adults.
